Why Resting Too Much Can Make Your Injury Feel Worse

In case of injuries, resting is always considered the best option. Staying idle for long periods can be even more harmful than engaging in activities that can cause further damage to the affected parts of the body. 

Although it is important to give a patient’s body enough time to heal, too much of it could lead to weakening of the muscles and stiffening of joints, which could eventually increase pain levels.

What Can Happen If We Rest Too Much?

Even though it is important to rest when getting an injury treated, over-resting may slow down the healing process or even worsen the condition. Everybody thinks that lying in bed is what helps to heal fast, but it is not always effective in terms of speeding up the process. There are cases where over-resting creates some problems which make the injury worse:

How To Know When Rest is Necessary?

Despite the effectiveness of exercise, there are times when you would do better by ensuring that you rest adequately so that your body can heal. It is at this point that knowing how long the affected area needs rest becomes extremely important and this should be decided depending on the following:

  1. Pain: Pain during movement shows that more rest will be required before one fully heals.
  2. Swelling: Having an inflamed area means that it will take some time before one is back on their feet.
  3. Injury: The first two days after sustaining any form of trauma require one to rest extensively.
  4. Difficulties Moving: If you find that it is hard for you to move, then it might be time to rest.
  5. Fatigue: Feeling extra fatigued shows that rest is required.

The role of resting cannot be underemphasized in injury rehabilitation. Excessive rest may hinder the process and make one experience more pain. What is important is balancing resting and engaging in various physical activities. By doing so, one can contribute to the injury healing process and experience less pain.
